Shrubs

Shrubs are good to cover up unwanted views but still remain small. Some even attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Being a popular type of plant we carry many varieties:

 

Apache Plum (Fallugia paradoxa)

This evergreen shrub is native to the mountains of the Southwest.  Produces white flowers all warm season followed by pink, silky, plumed seedheads.  Great habitat plant for birds and small animals.  Full sun to partial shade, little water and not fussy about soil.  Grows to 4' x 4'.

 

Arizona Rosewood (Vauquelinia californica)

This evergreen shrub has clusters of tiny white flowers in May and June.  Southwest native (2,500 to 5,000 feet).  Likes full sun, low water and not fussy about soil.  Grows to 14' x 10'.

 

Bear Grass (Nolina microcarpa)

This evergreen has bold grass-like leaves that spread into clumps to 6'.  Native to the Southwest.  Produces inconspicuous flowers in the spring.  Likes partial shade to full sun, little water and not fussy about soil.

 

Big Sage (Artemisia tridentata)

Evergreen shrub that grows to 4' x 4'.  Strongly aromatic foliage and inconspicuous flowers.  Wants full sun, low water and is not fussy about soil.

 

Black Foot Daisy (Melampodium leucanthum)

This perennial is native to Arizona.  Hardy to single digits.  Clumps of 1' white daisies spring to fall.  Likes full sun, moderate water and needs fast-draining soil.

 

Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica)

Comes as tree or shrub, with pink, purple or lavendar colored flowers. Is a cold hardy shrub that produces beautiful bright paper flowers. Likes full sun and moderate water.

 

Green Cloud (Leucophyllum frutescens)

This evergreen shrub has true green foliage and produces a profusion of purple flowers in the late summer rainy season.  Likes full sun, low water and well-draining soil.  4-8' x 4-8' at maturity.

 

Grosso French Lavendar (Lavandula intermedia 'Grosso')

This evergreen French cultivar is grown for its oil and showy flowers.  Full sun to partial shade.  Likes a bit of compost in its soil.  Moderate water.  Grows to 30" x 24". Hard to come by!

 

Mexican Evening Primrose (Oenothera speciosus)

This perennial groundcover will spread via runners and seeds.  Produces copious pink flowers in the spring.  Likes full sun to partial shade, little water and not fussy about soil.

 

Mt. Lemmon Marigold (Tagetes lemmoni)

This 4 x 4 feet wide marigold is native to the mountains of Southern Arizona. It becomes smothered in 1 inch golden yellow flowers beginning in early fall and in warmer climates the flowers continue until winter. Likes full sun to part shade, moderate water and is not fussy about soil.With its highly aromatic foliage, the plant is completely unpalatable to rabbit and deer.

 

New Mexico Privit (Forestiera neomexicana)

This perennial shrub/small tree is native to the desert Southwest.  Produces small yellow flowers in the spring followed by black berries that birds love.  Likes full sun, little water and not fussy about soil.  Grows to 12' x 6'.

 

Pomegranate (Punicaceae)

The pomegranate is a neat, rounded shrub or small tree that can grow to 20 or 30 ft., but more typically to 12 to 16 ft. in height. It has bright orange flowers with healthy fruit nearly round, 2.5 to 5 inch wide with several bright red hard seeds.

Pomegranates should be placed in the sunniest, warmest part of the yard or orchard for the best fruit, although they will grow and flower in part shade. The attractive foliage, flowers and fruits of the pomegranate, as well as its smallish size make it a excellent landscaping plant. The fruits are ripe when they have developed a distinctive color and make a metallic sound when tapped.

 

Purple Butterfly Bush (Buddleia davidii)

This very hardy perennial shrub produces purple flower spikes in profusion all summer that the butterflies love.  Full sun for most intense bloom.  Low to moderate water.

 

Quail Bush (Atriplex lentiformis)

This evergreen shrub produces showy clusters of yellow flowers and tan fruits that appear in the summer.  Native to the southwestern deserts.  Wants full sun and low water.  Grows to 8' x 8'.

 

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

Rosemary is an attractive evergreen shrub with pine needle-like leaves. It's trusses of blue flowers last through spring and summer in a warm, humid environment. It will grow to a height of between 3 and 5 feet. Delicious spice, try it in Rosemary Potatoes.

 

Russian Sage (Perovskia)

This deciduous perennial produces blue-lavender flowers July through September. It is an easy plant, likes any type of soil, full sun and requires only little to moderate water and is extremelt resistant to heat and drought. Performs wonderfully in warm summers. Each spring, cut down to the grown for new growth to start. Matures into 3-4 ft.

 

Snakeweed (Gutierrezia sarothrae)

This evergreen shrub is native to southwestern Arizona.  Produces a mass of yellow flowers in the fall.  Likes full sun, little water and not fussy about soil.  Grows to 2' x 2'.

 

Sundrops (Calylophus drummondii)

This perennial Western native has narrow, inch-wide yellow flowers that bloom in the spring and summer.  Wants full sun to partial shade, moderate water and is not fussy about soil.  Grows to 1' x 1'.

 

Texas Ranger (Leucophyllum frutescens)

This evergreen shrub has silver-green foliage and produces a profusion of purple flowers in the late summer rainy season.  Needs full sun and only low water.  Use well-draining soil. Becomes  4-8' x 4-8' at maturity.

 

Trumpet Honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens)

Evergreen vine or shrub.  Produces coral flowers in the early spring.  Attracts hummingbirds.  Likes partial shade to full sun and moderate water.  Grows to 5' x 5'.

 

Wolfberry (Lycium fremontii)

This deciduous shrub grows to 6' x 6'.  Dormant in the summer.  Becomes covered with small light green leaves in the winter, followed by small purple flowers in the spring.  Flowers turn to small red fruits in summer to fall.  Full sun to partial shade and little water.
