Penstemons - hummingbird attractors

Penstemons do well in the higher desert, they are hardy and produce beautiful flowers that attract hummingbirds. There are many species of penstemons. We are carrying the following, many are native:

 

Penstemon Barbatus (Penstemon barbatus)

This evergreen shrub produces 4' spikes of red flowers from late spring almost to fall.  Hummingbird plant.  Full sun to partial shade.  Little water.  Not fussy about soil.  Will seed itself.  Grows to 1' x 2'.

 

Foothills Penstemon (Penstemon heterophyllus)

This evergreen originated in a garden at Las Pilitas Nursery in California.  Produces a profusion of purple flowers all season.  Hummingbird plant.  Little water.  Full sun.  Not fussy about soil.  Grows to 18" x 30".

 

Parrys Penstamon (Penstemon parryi)

Native wildflower with bright deep pink flowers that cluster along 3' stalks.  Hummingbird plant.  Full sun.  Little water.  Not fussy about soil.

 

Canyon and Desert Penstemon (P. pseudospectabilis)

This evergreen shrub is native to southeastern Arizona.  Produces rose-purple flowers from March to May.  Full sun to partial shade.  Moderate water.  Not fussy about soil.  Grows to 3' x 3'.

 

Showy Penstemon (Penstemon spectabilis)

This evergreen is native to southeastern Arizona.  Produces 5' stalks of purple flowers in April and May.  Hummingbird plant.  Full sun to partial shade.  Moderate water.  Not fussy about soil.  Grows to 3' x 3'.

 

Supurb Penstemon (Penstemon superbus)

Evergreen.  Native to southeastern Arizona.  Produces 3' stalks of coral flowers in April and May.  Hummingbird plant.  Full sun to partial shade.  Moderate water.  Not fussy about soil.  Grows to 1' x 1'.
