Nut Trees

We are carrying three types of nut trees; pecan trees, pistachio trees as well as walnut trees. They all produce a delicious nut. In addition, pecan trees grow fast and provide excellent shade.

Pecan

Pecans produce a large shade tree, growing to 150 feet tall at maturity, with a spreading canopy and dark green foliage. Optimum conditions for the highest production are a long, warm growing season, without much of a temperature drop at night. They thrive in full sun and in soil that is fertile and deep. Pecan trees are deep rooted and need fairly large quantities of water during the growing season. To produce nuts, you need at least two varieties for cross-pollination.

Hican

The Hican tree is a cross between Hickory tree and pecan tree. It produces a large nut, 2 - 2.5 inches with an excellent hickory taste. Beautiful growing tree with large green foliage. Not a heavy producer.

Mahan

The Mahan tree produces large crops of large papershell nuts, average 2.5 inches in length. This is the best variety for shade tree.

Western Schley

Thrives in dry climate and higher altitude in the West.

Wichita

Produces medium sized nuts and heavy dark green foliage. Heavy bearer at early age.

Pistachio

The pistachio is a broad, bushy, deciduous tree which grows slowly to a height and spread of 25 to 30 feet. The trees are inclined to spread and droop, and may initially need staking. It is drought resistant and very tolerant of high summer temperatures, but cannot tolerate excessive dampness and high humidity. The tree has about the same cold resistance as almonds and olives. Under favorable conditions pistachio trees live and produce for centuries. The reddish, wrinkled fruits are borne in heavy clusters somewhat like grapes. Although known as a nut, the fruit of the pistachio is botanically a drupe, the edible portion of which is the seed.

Walnut

A decidious tree growing to 15m at a fast rate. It is in flower from May to June, and the seeds ripen from October to December. It requires well-drained soil and needs an open space; it cannot grow in the shade.
